Check manufacturers’ installation instructions to ensure compatability of the sand media.
The volume of sand media required will vary with make and capacity of filter, please check manufacturers recommendations.

Health and Safety Swimming Pool Filters
Only pools and spas that contain filtered and disinfected water can be considered safe places to swim. Poor maintenance may lead to clogged filters and place swimmers at risk of infection.
Typically swimming pool filters contain clean washed closely graded silica sand and are located in line immediately after the water pump. A pressure fed sand filter is termed a "High Rate" sand filter, and will generally remove particulate matter down to 10 microns in size. (ten thousounds of a millimetre)

Pool water is pumped under pressure into the top of the filter and leaves at the bottom. On the way through dirt and debris in the water is trapped by the particles of sand.

Filters General Maintenance
Sand filters need to cleaned regularly. By re-directing water back up through the sand bed and out to waste, the water flushes out the dirt, this is called back washing. Sand filters come with a valve known as a multiport valve to change the direction of water flow.

Sand media needs changing every three to five years, however, also be aware of a phenomena known as channeling. Quite simply this is where water cuts channels in the sand leading to a loss in filter efficiency.
