News Brief

Specialist Aggregates choose tarmac for their car park surfacing

Full Story:

Never, mind the sweltering temperatures, or it’s a Friday afternoon, its attention to detail that sets the best aside from the also-rans.

Such was the case of the crew from Stafford based Dawkes Contractors of Stafford, they arrived on the date and time agreed and just set too to “tarmac” the parking area to Specialist Aggregates' offices. Whilst I desperately wanted images of “typical car park” construction, such was the orchestrated performance that materials were effectively lost in a blur of bodies and wheel barrows. Then, with the only evidence of their presence being the completed project, a cheery wave and they were on their way.

By 5.00pm the bill was in my in-box, an abject lesson for any aspiring company!

And yes it is Tarmac! In-spite of “European harmonisation” on standards, and the “black stuff” neither having been invented by the pioneering eighteenth century Macadam family of road surveyors, or indeed containing any tar, to me, it is, and always will be tarmac, and not Asphaltic Concrete. But that’s just a rant, and perhaps a story for another day …..

Dawkes Recipe for the perfect drive:
Dig out, backfill and compact 150mm of hardcore.

Make good with 60mm of 20mm Dense Binder “basecourse”.

Top off with 30mm of Stone Mastic Asphalt "Wearing course".

Add a big pinch of experience and professionalism and within hours a drive that will last a lifetime.
