Kūlgrinda - Hidden stone trackways.
Monday 21 October, 2013
News Brief

Kūlgrinda - Lithuania's secret underwater trackways.

Full Story:

We have a recent edition of the BBC’s QI to thank for this week’s Spagg Blogg. Stephen Fry described “Kūlgrinda” as a Lithuanian underwater trackway made of sunken boulders across a swamp, originally was used as a hidden secret walkway between villages.

Effectively built by medieval “Ice Road Truckers”, stones were dragged across the ice in winter and allowed to sink as the ice melted in the spring.

Recent research has discovered over 25 Kūlgrindas in Lithuania, with the best known example being across the Sietuva swamp in Samogitia. Indeed Kulgrinda is derived from Kūlis taken from the local dialect meaning “stone”.

Whilst we don’t have any images of Lithuanian rocks, we did snap this trackway across a rather muddy slate working – a not so secret Welsh Kūlgrinda? Meanwhile, the postman's comments towards this sunken watery access to a Chelsea garden in 2009 are not recorded, but remaining on a rocky-water theme we rather liked this natural split His 'n Hers boulder on the shores of Loch Garten in Scotland.

We cant promise a frozen lake to float the boulders across, however, for feature walkways or traffic restraint boulders follow the link below.
