Sand for Lime Based Mortar fundamentally differs from "Soft Building Sand" available through builders merchants as this often contains an excess of fine material.

This fine material consists two distinct parts:

Firstly, very fine sand particles (fines) ranging in size from around a third to a tenth of a millimetre in diameter.
Excessive amounts of fines will demand more water to achieve a mix which can lead to shrinkage, an increased sensitivity to adverse weather conditions and de-bonding especially to low suction backgrounds.

However, the bonding of a render both with a background, and between coats is dependant upon a percentage of these fines being present. Generally up to 20% of fines will achieve bonding without compromising permeability and capillary suction.

Secondly, ultra fine clay (sometimes referred to as silt or loam) These clays have sizes well below a tenth of a millimetre in diameter.
Clay minerals retain water resulting in extended drying periods, and are often responsible for a sand's colour. Hence, a sand chosen solely for its colour may well not be suitable for use.

The suitability of sand also depends on the distribution of particle sizes larger than those regarded as "fine". A quality sand will comprise a range of particle sizes both allowing for the drying of the newly placed mortar and for its long term permeability.

Sands with grain sizes of up to 6mm are suited to general building, those with particle size not greater than 3mm are suitable for stipple coats, base coats and rough finishes, whilst smooth finishing coats can be achieved with sands with grain size of 2mm or less

Specialist Aggregates have brought together those sources which have characteristics suitable for Lime Based Mortar. Whilst we are unable to provide recommendation for a particular application our 20kg "sample" facility provides an efficient method of establishing a sand's suitability for use.
