Does salt damage the environment?
Wednesday 18 January, 2012
News Brief

Dear SpAggs,
Does putting salt on our roads damage the environment?

Full Story:

Observations in Canada, Germany, and the North Eastern States of America have demonstrated that concentrations of salt introduced into the environment via road de-icing operations can cause damage to plant and animal life as well as potentially accumulating within ground water.

This view has to be balanced against the sheer volume of salt utilised in these snow-prone countries and the concentrations of salt used compared with the intermittent use as experienced in the UK.

The use of salt to de-ice roads is a major factor in reducing accidents and ensuring the efficient flow of goods and services, and at the present time there is not a viable cost effective alternative.

Of potential concern in the UK are Local Authorities proclaiming that they have increased their stocks this year by up to 50%, when through research and innovative dispersion methods major users throughout the world are striving to reduce salt use.

In a complex society of conflicting demands, perhaps we need to be more informed of potential environmental damage caused both by the de-icing salt itself and the associated additives incorporated to improve its flow characteristics.
