News Brief

Durable and practical slate stepping stones for traditional and contemporary gardens

Full Story:

This months featured product takes closer look at rounded slate stepping stones, classic dark grey / black in colour and making a sizeable “footprint” at around 450mm across. At 50mm thickness the stones are sufficiently strong to allow them to be set direct into a path or lawn without any foundations.

Our first image shows a very modern interpretation by students of Reaseheath College, setting the slate stepping stones into a path of coloured cockle shell.

More traditionally the stones have been used in Japanese style gardens to delineate a “dewy path” or Roji, leading from the clamour of everyday world to the serenity of the Tea Ceremony. At the time of this image the Tea House was shown to be closed by the stone at the entrance tied with a top knot ( sekimori ishi)

In researching the product I came across an image that made me chortle at the time and still raises a smile. Lanterns are an integral feature of Japanese gardens and traditionally have a flat rock placed along side them, enabling the lamp-lighter to rest his lamp on the stone whilst he takes a wooden spill to light the lantern.

The notion of a lantern in the middle of a lake is a romantic western interpretation, but comically impractical! The inscrutable lighter wades out to the lantern and then not being able to put his lantern down ………………. I just wish I could draw caricatures!!
