Glass Fire Coals, a Dial and a Thruppenny Bit

News Brief

Glass Fire coals with a facinating history.

Full Story:

Our supplier of glass fire coals operates in one of only five remaining glass cones in the UK. The cone known as “The Dial” in Stourbridge (West Midlands, UK, DY8 4YN) was completed in 1788 having been constructed from some 1.5 million bricks. In the 1930's due to its poor state of repair the top 70ft (20 metres) was removed and a unique ventilated Art Deco “Coolie Hat” as added. It would be a great story to claim that this dodecadron (12 sided) roof had been inspired by the similarly shaped nickel–brass thruppenny bit ( three pence coin) that was first issued in 1937, but in fact the roof had been completed two years earlier.

Our images show the fire coals which were first developed at The Dial in the 1970’s and became a distinctive addition to electric fires of that period. The product now finds application for “safe” fires in museum exhibits, theatre productions and photographic assignments.
Also shown is part of the Art Deco Roof at The Dial, together with the distinctive thruppenny coin which remained legal tender until 1971.

Historic Note
Brick built cone shaped structures were the key to achieving processing temperatures of in excess of a thousand degrees throughout the industrial revolution. By what we now call “turbo charging” the burning of charcoal or coal it was possible to achieve extremely high temperatures. From the 17th century in metal smelting and pottery manufacture the cone was “charged” and then fired, however, in glass manufacture the employees actually worked in the structure. Air was channelled under the cone and up through the centre raising furnace temperatures to levels where glass could be made and worked.
