Primary Colour and Source: Natural coloured sand and gravel "ballast" comparable to products originating from quarries in East Anglia and the South of England. Whilst sands and gravels were once moved by rail, vast quantities continue to be used for ready mixed concrete.

Actual Grain Size: 0.1-0.6mm
High Fidelity Analogue at 00/HO Gauge to real life 10-40mm natural gravels. BS EN 12620 Aggregates for concrete. This is the principal standard for specifying sands and gravels for ready-mixed concrete

Originators Note: Sand and Gravel for concrete is normally graded from zero to 20mm size. At OO/HO scale this would require gravel to be under 0.25mm in size and sand would be even finer which would make the analogue product dusty.
Hence, our Sand and Gravel Analogue is necessarily a compromise, it is graded to provide a granular visual impression but this creates a material that is larger in grain size than a true analogue.
In the construction industry mixed sand and gravel is confusingly often referred to as ballast or "all-in" ballast. This has absolutely nothing to do with the crushed and graded stone ballast used to support railway sleepers. The double meaning of the term provides for mega-bites of on-line mis-information !

Z Scale (1:220): Real life 22 to 125mm coarse gravel - River bed and coarse sea side gravels - Open Quarry faces and stockpiles.

N Scale (1:148): Real life 15-100mm coarse gravel.
TT Scale (1:120): Real life 12- 75mm coarse gravel Gravel scree and open heathland - Urban Apocalypse. The perfect light coloured disaster analogue for wargame scaping.

OO/HO Scale (1:76): Real Life 10-40mm

In real life both the old British Standard and more recent European Standards call for sands and gravels that are clean and free from organic residues just like our sand and gravel analogue only in miniature !

Our natural sand and gravel analogue makes for perfectly scaled clean wagon fill and depot stockpiles.

O Scale (1:43): 5-20mm Concrete Aggregate. In the real world the largest single application for aggregates. Our gravel analoge can be bound with cement, but does not provide for great strength in thin sections. Try epoxy or polyurethane resins or PVA glue to increase strength, or use as a dust free filler/extender in Jesmonite®.
Ideal for quarry-scapes and stockpiles. A complete background for film and image beach and river scenics.

G Scale (1:22): 2-14mm Fine Concrete Aggregate. Use as a clean fine texture background for river banks and beaches.

Colour & Form:
We take great care to provide accurate images, however, shade variations can occur both with the products themselves and with ambient lighting.

When used for modelling, perceived variance to colour and reflectance can occur due to base materials and adhesives used.

It can be difficult to adequately describe and visualise grain size, we do, however, show products in context with additional images.
