News Brief

Walk in Richmond Park reveals pond construction method.

Full Story:

Sunday 3rd March, whilst locals grumbled that Isabella Plantation in London’s Richmond Park would never be the same again, the boss was in his element viewing the construction detail of the recently drained streams and ponds.

Thanks in part to Lottery Funding the plantation with its stunning displays of Azaleas and Rhododendrons is having some essential maintenance carried out on its planting and water features.

The underlying “rocks” in the area of the plantation comprise relatively new sands, silts and clays deposited as part of the London Clay formation. Deposited in sub-tropical conditions broadly around 45 million years ago, the clays are typically a dark blue-grey colour, however on weathering they turn to a dreary yellow-brown.

The name given to the plantation is thought to be a derivation of Isabel a 15th century description of just such a dull yellow colour, perhaps hinting at the area was formerly a localised hollow of weathered and re-deposited clays.
The current renovation works to the ponds have removed over fifty years of accumulated mud and organic debris to expose the original yellow– brown clay lining, indicating that the streams and ponds have been sculpted by re-working the material found in situ at various stages since the 1950’s.

Our images show the work in progress on clearing debris and exposing the Isabel clay lining, together with a new extension to Peg’s Pond again showing the yellow brown clay in the newly cut bank
The fourth image taken in May 2012 shows the riot of colour more usually associated with the plantation during late spring.

Not everyone is so lucky to have natural clays in their backyard, however, Specialist Aggregates supply natural Sodium Bentonite for the construction of natural streams and ponds.

Update 6th April 2013: Looks like it has worked! The pond has been refilled - all we need is a little warm weather to establish the reeds and bring out the blossom
