News Brief

Comic strip interpretation dumbs down internationally significant geological site.

Full Story:

The cloud is low over Ben Mor, its not exactly warm, but this is Utopia, waking in the hospitable and historic Inchnadamph Hotel at the head of loch Assynt (probably the only hotel on the world where the landlord offers guests a geological map with the menu). Home for two centuries of soggy notebooks, rugged traverses, and packed lunches – Geological Mecca!

South from the hotel, the precariously located, fractured, and exquisitely made globe on the hillside at Knockan Crag deserves even more than the photo opportunity provided by the stunning Assynt back-drop and perhaps should be elevated as a thought provoking signature image at the entrance to the Geopark.

The crags are well worth a visit, not only having the essential pre-requisite of parking, loos and views, but providing an innovative field explanation of both the local and regional geological features based around sympathetically engineered and well maintained access. However, within the interpretation centre what disassociated commission allowed this ancient and internationally significant geological site to be debased to a time travelling comic strip?

A similar style of interpretation shown in our third image on the comparatively youthful Jurassic Coast at Charmouth (Mid age approx 170Mya) some 600 miles to the south feels much more at ease within its context being both informative and inspirational.

Even in the twenty first century it appears that geological interpretation remains a tussle between fresh outlook and established thinking!
