Matchbox fettles up some glass delights.

News Brief

Specialist Aggregates produces Sea-Glass in former tumbling machines

Full Story:

First introduced in 1953 die-cast road rollers, dump trucks and subsequently model cars produced by Mattel at their Homerton Factory, in the East End of London were sold in replica matchboxes, hence the well-known brand name.

The model cars were very much part of my childhood, however, I have to confess the financial demise of the company in 1982, with much of the tooling and production being shipped out to Macao passed me by.

Some 30 years later, one of the machines used at the original Hackney based Matchbox factory to “fettle” ( ie remove by tumbling) the sharp edges from metal parts has been brought back into production by Specialist Aggregates to produce beach-glass.

As shown opposite our sea glass comprises a range of fully tumbled random shapes in a spectrum of colours including amber, reds and green. The glass is suitable for mosaics, aquaria and jewellery design.

Our images also demonstrate our inspiration for the project, a sample of glass, sand and oyster shell dredged from the Venice lagoon near Murano, and now having pride of place in the office. Other images demonstrate the intricate skill of the Venetian glass makers art with an exquisite chandelier displayed in Murano’s Museo Vetrario, and feature pieces of glass “woven” into the gates of the Peggy Guggenheim Museum on the banks of the grand canal.
