Maze in the centre of Europe

Full Story:

One of the most remarkable projects that Specialist Aggregates has ever worked on, (and yet it never came to fruition) was a proposal to build a maze in the centre of Europe.

Not a political centre like Brussels or Maastricht but the actual geographic centre, which, depending on how it is calculated, is located near the village of Kremnica in Slovakia.

The maze design was to be a gift from Randoll Coate to the townspeople to help promote tourism in the area. Not only is it the centre today, Kremnica was literally seen as the heart of Europe during the Middle Ages when its gold mines made it one of the most important mining towns in the world.

Randoll took up designing mazes when in his mid sixties, and was responsible for over 50 mazes in the UK and around the world including The Sun Maze at Longleat for the Marquess of Bath, and The Beetles Maze at the Liverpool National Garden Festival in 1984.

Our images show the proposal as a hand drawn and coloured plan presented to Specialist Aggregates by a sprightly 92 year old Randoll in 2001. The close-up shows typical Coate symbolism with the centre of the maze marked with a golden heart.

Sadly Randoll passed away aged 96 in December 2005, before his labyrinth of coloured interlocking paths could be realised.
