Primary Colour and Source: Over time, ballast from its various sources, becomes contaminated causing it to loose its free draining properties and further, through attrition, breaks down, thus reducing its carrying capabilities.

In particular heritage railways suffer contamination from oil, coal dust and clinker.

Each year thousands of tonnes of dirty ballast are replaced. The "spent" materials are now increasingly being reworked for construction aggregates, and a proportion is cleaned / resized and replaced, therefore, reducing the need for new, quarried stone.

BSEN 13450 Aggregates for Rail Ballast. Principally being hard, clean and durable stone crushed and initially graded to 30-50mm. Spent ballast will additionally contain weathered particles, organic matter and inorganic contamination.
