Argex Backfill. A lightweight backfill material - supplied in a bulk bag- used extensively for backfill to structures where good drainage and the weight of imposed loads are a consideration.

Granule Size: Approx. 4-8mm.

Density: Argex^® is a lightweight aggregate with a bulk density at point of supply of approximately 850 kg/m³. (ie volume for volume Argex Backfillill^® is approximately half the weight of "normal" limestone or gravel aggregate).

Moisture Content: As supplied 4-8mm Argex ^® Backfill is likely to contain a natural moisture content of up to 15% by weight. For loose lay applications in contact with timber due consideration should be given to appropriate protection and/or treatment. Subgrade long term maximum moisture content can rise to a maximum of 25%.

Description & Application:
Argex ^® Backfill is is a brick-like lightweight aggregate that is frost resistant and will not break down when saturated with water. It is also non combustible and has excellent sound and thermal insulation properties.

This specially graded lightweight aggregate has a minimum of "fines", and is offered for use in situations where aesthetics are not a principal consideration.

Mass (unbound) backfill to structures and services.
Densities are typically 700 to 900kg/m³ for compacted materials depending on ambient moisture content. This reduces imposed loads on retaining structures by up to 60%.
Due to the spherical shape of the aggregate minimal effort is required to achieve full compaction. Typically the material should be placed in layers up to 300mm deep, raked and lightly vibrated. When back filling larger volumes with Argex Backfill, tracked vehicles can be used and subject to local conditions placement depths greater than 300mm can be achieved. Care should be taken when adopting this method to avoid surface crushing of the Backfill.

Compacted Argex Backfill is likely to contain >40% voids.

Pipe Bedding
Argex Backfill can be used as granular bedding and sidefill to both rigid and flexible pipes. Refer to BS EN 1610 for design requirements.

The aggregate does not degrade or compact over time, keeping it effective with the minimum of maintenance.

Argex^® is made by sintering pelletising selected clays in a rotary kiln. As they are fired, the pellets fuse to create a brick-like structure whilst moisture in the pellets expands to produce a microporous core. The resulting granules are lightweight, porous, and have a high resistance to crushing.

Environmental Considerations:
As Argex is approximately 50% the weight of "normal" aggregate, twice the volume can be carried, reducing vehicle movements both on and off highway.
For a given volume, bound Argex Concretes and screeds use less cement, therefore providing a significant energy saving.

Logistics:
This product option is supplied in a non returnable bulk bag on a pallet and stretch wrapped for additional protection and security.

Pallets are delivered by national couriers and off-loaded onto a level hard-standing using vehicle tail-lift and pallet truck. Our couriers do not offer a crane (Hiab) off-load facility.

Pallet deliveries by national couriers are not advised for locations with narrow or difficult access. Please advise during checkout or contact our office for advice if you have specific delivery requirements or concerns.

Failed deliveries due to problems with access which as not been pre-notified will be returned to our warehouse and charged for both outward and return delivery,

The immediate product wrapping, pallet stretch wrap and wooden pallet can all be recycled.
