Description & Application:
Pumice is a light weight bubbly volcanic glass - essentially a "solid rock foam". Deposits of pumice occur throughout the world with notable deposits on Iceland and the Italian island of Lipari.
Being a natural product pumice contains no harmful substances, it is inert with pH of around 8.0. Pumice is resistant to frost and chemicals, and will not break down in water. It is also non-combustible and has excellent sound and thermal insulation properties.
Applications include the production of lightweight concrete, and building blocks where it is especially useful for the creation of film and theatre sets. Pumice also finds a use as a filter media for potable and industrial waste water as well as odour control.
Our clients have used pumice as pebbles in the public domain in interior and exterior landscaping where the weight of natural pebbles would not be acceptable.
Once dried, pumice absorbs colour pigments and fragrance very well and hence is useful in potpourri mixes.
