Description & Use:

Bentonite Freeflow is a closely graded dust free bentonite clay sand. The sand is graded to initially allow for ease of flow into cracks and joints and to allow for water to penetrate and "activate" the bentonite. As water is absorbed, the clay expands to fill cavities both between individual sand grains and the adjacent soil. Once hydrated, the clay forms an impermeable barrier.

This bentonite sand can be introduced directly into sub-aerial tension cracks allowing for natural moisture to be taken up by the clay.

Background:
Ground water is the most important single contributor to landslide initiation. Surface cracks created by periods of prolonged dry weather can influence drainage patterns and increase soil moisture in deeper layers during subsequent heavy or seasonal fluctuations in rainfall. Bentonite sand can offer part of a surface water management scheme helping to increase soil stability and mitigate against potential landslides.
